Supermicro is a computer hardware company based in San Jose, California. Primarily known as an OEM manufacturer, it also develops and sells its own branded products.
The company was founded in 1993 by Taiwanese American brothers Charles Liang and David Huang, along with Joe Chen; the three met at a high school math competition. Super Micro Computer Inc. began manufacturing motherboards on a workbench in their parents’ garage. The company was incorporated in California in 1994.
In 2003, Supermicro became the first company to begin offering blade servers with the acquisition of Quiet Computer Technology Corp, a workstation-focused server maker. It began to add more blade servers and switch products when it acquired the assets of SMC Networks, the developer of the S-Class Sat Switch.
In late 2009, Supermicro received Silicon Image, a provider of external I/O connectivity products for servers. The acquisition included further expansion into the technology of the mezzanine. it also produces workstation-class motherboards.

Some server products are branded with the SuperMicro logo, but many are not; these include blade servers, rackmount servers, networking services, server management software, and storage systems, including 3U and 5U chassis kits. In January 2019, SuperMicro was named as an assembler for the AMD server chip from GlobalFoundries. SuperMicro is a member of the SGI-Fellowship, an industry consortium that encourages academic networking and collaboration among computer science departments in US universities.
