Partnerships with Fear of God:
Fear of God, like most fashion companies, has partnered with a variety of people and brands over the years. Fear of God has collaborated with everyone from Nike to Converse to Vans, Jay-Z to Kendrick Lamar, and many more. One of our favorite collections thus far has been the collaboration with Union LA to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the legendary retailer. Lorenzo collaborated with Essentials to release a line of magnificent pieces, ranging from tie dye hoodies and tees to countless muted tees, joggers, shorts, and caps. It’s one of the more flashy sets Lorenzo has released under the Essentials label, but fans adored it.
Fear of God Kid’s Collection
Street wear for kids isn’t a new concept, and as a father himself, it’s no surprise that Lorenzo has dabbled in it with Essentials. He’s released a number of collections throughout the years, and the items don’t deviate too far from the aesthetic of the adult collections. The majority of the items are knitwear in muted colors, such as shorts, tees, hoodies, and joggers.
Growing post-pandemic
Fear of God has a problem as it attempts to turn pandemic success into post-pandemic expansion. Essentials has a neutral palette, large silhouettes, and a distinct minimalist logo that retails from $40 to $300. That may be classified as street wear, but the designer prefers to avoid that label and is not afraid to venture into new product terrain.
According to List, ear of God ranked in the top 20 trendiest brands for the first time in 2020, trailing only Bellman and Monocle in terms of search traffic and online interaction. Searches for the brand increased 163% between January and February 2021. In 2020, Fear of God Essentials was the third most popular brand on the reselling site Stock. Last year, its logo hoodie was resold more than 23,000 times on the platform, outselling the next greatest item of the year, the Supreme Box Logo T-shirt, by more than 10,000 pieces.
The luxury label is also expanding, thanks to a relationship with Zeng in September 2020. The well-received Seventh Collection, which was released in November, is selling well. Net-a-Porter, Sense, Far fetch, and End Clothing are among the retailers who carry the brand. “We’re moving higher-priced things faster than we’ve ever sold them before,” Lorenzo says, referring to suiting and tailoring. Since carrying Fear of God in Spring/Summer 2016, Sense has “nearly doubled” its investment with each subsequent Fear of God release, according to Federico Brassy, vice president of menswear procurement.
Avoiding the luxury calendar and rules
Lorenzo is laser-focused and does not follow the rules. Fear of God does not participate in fashion week, and the premium line is released whenever it is ready, regardless of the fashion calendar. The Seventh Collection, which debuted last November, took two years to develop.
This strategy has shown to be effective. “Covid underlined that way we’re functioning is very much in step with how the world is — ever-changing,” Lorenzo explains. “I believe that once you get caught up in a system, the system takes precedence over the products and messaging.” We want the product and story to always come first. We can accomplish this because we deliver on our own time.” It’s not all free-for-all: Essentials has a more consistent release schedule.
Are Fear of God and other brands in risk of becoming diluted? “I just go with my gut instincts and do what I believe we need to accomplish.” For us, [Essentials] was something that was required, something that would allow us to communicate authentically with more people.
